Homeowners have various reasons why they want to make renovations. Others simply want to enhance the visual appeal of their interiors, or reclaim or increase floor space. There are also those who do it simply to update their living spaces because the existing one no longer inspires them. While a renovation often conjures thoughts of forking out a lot of money, these do not need be too expensive. If you're interior redecorating budget is modest, the following are some of the things you can try.

For one, you can make use of lighting to add visual interest to your room. Lamps and light fixtures are not very pricey and it doesn't typically take more than a day to mount them especially if you're only doing one room. Accent lights will highlight decorative pieces, like artworks, or draw the eye to interesting wall treatments or architectural features. Lighting can also set the overall ambiance of the room. For example, bright white light can be very energizing while warm yellow light tends to be more calming. Apart from setting the mood of the space, it can also make it more functional. Task lighting for example will allow you to repurpose underutilized areas of your home into spaces conducive for reading, studying, or making handicrafts.

Updating a room need not be expensive, and one cost-effective way to do that is to replace your window treatments. Throwing on black and white curtains for example will add elegance to your space. Since they are neutral, black and white curtains can be mixed and matched with other design elements easily.

You may also replace the throw pillow covers or the covering of the couch itself to give it a fresh look. More often than not, these would be more pocket-friendly than purchasing a brand new set. If you really want to change your sofa, but don't want to spend too much consider getting used ones sold in thrift stores. Some sanding and a fresh coat of paint will make that old furniture look more valuable than how much you bought it for.

Keep in mind though that when purchasing items required for your home improvement project, don't decide solely on price. Evaluate for quality and durability. They may be cheap to buy at the outset, but if you need to replace them often and sooner than you expect, this will only offset any savings you've made previously. Also, put in some elbow grease into the project so you will save on labor costs. Enlist other members of your family to expedite the completion of the project to further bring down costs. Do not forget though that tasks that pertain to electrical wirings are best left to experts for your own protection.

Updating your room need not be expensive. Using black and white curtains for instance will lend a touch of sophistication to your room. More inexpensive design ideas can be found here.
